Ella Sri Lanka is the most popular hiking, climbing, and trekking destination in the hill country, offering numerous non-touristy paths. Known as the second destination in the world for the highest concentration of oxygen after Switzerland, it’s ideal for endurance and fitness. Ella Sri Lanka features nature trails filled with fragrant flowers, chirping birds, medicinal herbs, and friendly animals. These trails lead to popular hills like Little Adam’s Peak, Eagle Rock, Mahmevnawa Meditation Hill, and the challenging Ella Rock. Other scenic spots include Illuk Pelessa, Makulu Ella, Ambatanne, Haabetigala, and Kurulaangala with prehistoric paintings.

Ella Rock was founded by foreign travellers to hike challenging hills in their short vacations. It is a 7 km hike from town. The last 2 km are strenuous. At the ‘halfway’ point, approximately 1100 meters above sea level, the climate changes to a cool 18°C. Suddenly, the vegetation turns to a bright, light green. The sweat disappears. The trail leads from one hill to another. On the right, there is a view similar to that of ‘Kashmir Gardens’. On the left, you can admire the beauty of ‘Little Adam’s Peak’. Foreign travellers claim that it appears somewhat like an image of ‘Machu Picchu’ in Peru. After the steep climb to the top, one arrives at a flat meadow of about 2 acres, with clear streams, ancient flower beds, tall trees & a pond for bathing & freshwater creatures.

Atop the precipices of Ella Rock, locals strategically placed numerous rocks to topple advancing adversaries during wartime. The area offers plenty of viewpoints that reveal breathtaking views of the town and the mountain ranges of the ‘Green Canyon.’ The magnificent Ravana Waterfalls cascade down from four tiers, adding to the scenic beauty. Locals believe that the flat peak top, similar to Sigiriya, once served as an ancient palace garden.
